How to Play Indian Rummy

A practical beginner guide to 13-card Indian Rummy: build valid groups, make a declaration and learn through free online practice.

The goal is to arrange all 13 cards into valid sequences and sets. A valid hand needs at least two sequences, including one pure sequence, before you declare.

1. Know the objective

Indian Rummy is a draw-and-discard card game. On each turn, take one card from the closed deck or discard pile, improve your hand, then discard one card. You win by making a valid declaration before your opponent.

2. Take a turn

  1. Draw one card from the deck or the visible discard pile.
  2. Check whether the new card helps a sequence or a set.
  3. Keep flexible middle cards when they can connect in more than one direction.
  4. Discard one card that is isolated or unlikely to complete a useful group.

3. Build sequences and sets

Sequence: 5♥, 6♥, 7♥ are consecutive cards of the same suit.
Set: 8♠, 8♥, 8♣ are the same rank in different suits.

A pure sequence uses no joker as a substitute. Finish this requirement early: it protects your hand from an invalid declaration and makes the rest of your decisions clearer.

4. Declare only when every card fits

Before declaring, check every card is assigned to a valid sequence or set. A hand with a good-looking group but no pure sequence is not a valid declaration in standard 13-card play.
