13-Card Indian Rummy Rules

Use this plain-English reference for the standard groups, turn flow and declaration checks used in free practice games.

Standard 13-card Rummy requires two or more sequences, and at least one must be a pure sequence. The remaining cards can be arranged in sequences or sets.

Cards and deal

Each player receives 13 cards. The remaining cards form the closed deck; one card starts the open discard pile. The exact number of players and deck rules can vary by table, so use the table rules shown before play begins.

Sequences

A sequence uses three or more consecutive cards in the same suit. A pure sequence uses no joker as a substitute. An impure sequence may use a joker to replace a missing card, where that variation allows it.

Pure sequence: 4♣, 5♣, 6♣
Impure sequence: 9♦, Joker, J♦

Sets

A set uses three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. Do not repeat a suit in a set. For example, 7♠, 7♥ and 7♦ form a set.

Turn order and declaration

Draw one card, arrange the hand, and discard one card. When all cards are in valid groups and the pure-sequence requirement is met, declare. Check the full hand before confirming: one unmatched card makes the declaration invalid.

Basic scoring

Scoring rules differ between tables. As a beginner, focus first on reducing isolated high cards and completing your pure sequence early. Use the on-site score calculator for quick practice-round totals.
